Calling from London

London is drowning and the Apocalyse is coming. Or was that It's the end of the world as we know it? .
The best thing about this song is that The Clash described the many ways of the hypothetical end of the world by combining individualism and a global vision. In the lyrics of London Calling we get resignation, anger, cynicism and criticism for a mind-numbing society full of pretension.

London calling to the faraway towns
Now that war is declared and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls

London calling, now don't look at us
All that phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain't got no swing
Except for the ring of that truncheon thing

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
Because London is drowning and I, I live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, and go it alone
London calling upon the zombies of death
Quit holding out and draw another breath

London calling and I don't want to shout
But when we were talking I saw you nodding out
London calling, see we ain't got no highs
Except for that one with the yellowy eyes

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
Because London is drowning and I, I live by the river

Now get this
London calling, yeah, I was there, too
And you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
After all this, won't you give me a smile?
I never felt so much alike

What has become of Major Tom?

David Bowie is reported to have written Space Oddity inspired by Stanley Kubrik's movie 2001: A Space Odissey. Major Tom is an astronaut launched into space in a flurry of media attention. He will then cut off communication with earth, at least until the early 80s XD.

Ground control to Major Tom
Ground control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God's love be with you

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,
Four, three, two, one, liftoff

This is ground control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell me wife I love her very much she knows

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you....

Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.

Bowie will revisit this character in Ashes to Ashes, where he gets communication with Ground Control back, and claims to be perfectly happy. Ground Control no longer cares, hence the burial phrase 'Ashes to Ashes', and concludes that he's just a junkie.
Bowie was tackling his drug addiction problems at the time he wrote this song so he is believed to have mirrored himself in Major Tom.
The surreal video still remains one of my all-time favourites. It's an MTV classic indeed but, just in case you were wondering, MTV didn't exist when the video was first released.

Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true

They got a message
from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved
all I've needed to love
Sordid details following"

The shrieking of nothing is killing
Just pictures of Jap girls
in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing

[CHORUS]
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's
a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light
but no smoking pistol

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue,
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now

[CHORUS]

My mother said
to get things done
You'd better not mess
with Major Tom

The last incursion of Major Tom in Bowie's discography was in 1995, when he dueted with Pet Shop Boys for their homage to science fiction Hallo Spaceboy.

DB: (If I fall, moondust will cover me, moondust will cover me...
If I fall, moondust will cover me
If I fall, moondust will cover me)
Spaceboy, you're sleepy now
Your silhouette is so stationary
You're released, but your custody calls
And I wanna be free
Don't you wanna be free?
Do you like girls or boys?
It's confusing these days
But moondust will cover you
Cover you
D+N: So bye bye love
Yeah, bye bye love
Hallo spaceboy
DB: This chaos is killing me
Hallo spaceboy
NT: (Spaceboy, spaceboy, spaceboy
Hallo)
DB: (Moondust will cover me)
NT: Ground to Major, bye bye Tom
DB: This chaos is killing me
NT: Dead the circuit, countdown's wrong
DB: This chaos is killing me
NT: Planet Earth, is control on?
DB: So sleepy now
NT: Do you wanna be free?
Don't you wanna be free?
D+N: Do you like girls or boys?
It's confusing these days
DB: But moondust will cover you
Cover you
D+N: So bye bye love
Yeah, bye bye love
Hallo spaceboy
NT: (Spaceboy, spaceboy, spaceboy, hallo)
D+N: Hallo spaceboy
DB: You're sleepy now
This chaos is killing me
This chaos is killing me
So
D+N: Bye bye love
DB: Yeah,
D+N: Bye bye love
NT: Do you wanna be free?
DB: Yes, I wanna be free
D+N: Hallo spaceboy
DB: You're sleepy now
Do you like girls or boys?
It's confusing these days
But moondust will cover you
Cover you
D+N: So bye bye love
Yeah, bye bye love
Hallo spaceboy
NT: (Spaceboy, spaceboy, spaceboy, hallo)
D+N: Hallo spaceboy
NT: You're sleepy now
DB: Hallo spaceboy
NT: (Spaceboy, spaceboy, spaceboy, hallo)
D+N: Hallo, hallo

This is MY Phil Collins

This is an underrated Genesis' 90s hit, mostly overlooked by radio stations and tv channels nowadays. It tells of a kid who walked out on an abusive father and a suffering mother; confronting the past becomes a hurtful experience for him years later, but eventually he gathers all his courage to come back to their place, which ends up being useful because he only gets rejection.
Phil Collins' drums at his best.

No Son of Mine

Cargado por WallPul

Well the key to my survival
was never in much doubt

the question was how I could keep sane

trying to find a way out

Things were never easy for me

peace of mind was hard to find

and I needed a place where I could hide

somewhere I could call mine

I didn't think much about it

til it started happening all the time

soon I was living with the fear everyday

of what might happen that night

I couldn't stand to hear the

crying of my mother

and I remember when

I swore that, that would be the

Last they'd see of me

And I never went home again

they say that time is a healer

and now my wounds are not the same

I rang the bell with my heart in my mouth

I had to hear what he'd say

He sat me down to talk to me

he looked me straight in the eyes

he said:

You're no son, you're no son of mine

You're no son, you're no son of mine

You walked out, you left us behind

and you're no son, no son of mine

oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it

and as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it

You're no son, you're no son of mine

but where should I go,

and what should I do

you're no son, you're no son of mine

but I came here for help, oh I came here for you

Well the years they passed so slowly

I thought about him everyday

what would I do, if we passed on the street

would I keep running away

in and out of hiding places

soon I'd have to face the facts

we'd have to sit down and talk it over

and that would mean going back

they say that time is a healer

and now my wounds are not the same

I rang that bell with my heart in my mouth

I had to hear what he'd say

He sat me down to talk to me

he looked me straight in the eyes

he said:

You're no son, you're no son of mine

You're no son, you're no son of mine

When you walked out, you left us behind

and you're no son, you're no son of mine

oh, his words how they hurt me, I'll never forget it

and as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it

You're no son, you're no son of mine

But where should I go and what should I do

You're no son, you're no son of mine

But I came here for help, oh I was looking for you

You're no son, you're no son of mine - oh

You're no son - ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah

You're no son, you're no son of mine - oh, oh...

Once upon a time in pop

There was a time when the lyrics of pop music were involved, or at least, they would let no-one indifferent. I mean, the lyrics had something to say; they weren't there just to get public attention with vague plain language such as "baby baby", "you're my world" or "it's like that".

I hadn't been born when Kim Wilde's first single came out, and I was too young when she had her first hits in the 80s but I've always had an enormous curiosity to know how audiences and critics responded to her work. Behind those catchy tunes, there laid intricate lyrics and dark stories.

Child come away

Honestly, I'm not sure about the meaning of this song but I think it's about a rape in a small community.

Child come away
It's the girl with the deputy walking by
Child go and play
No I won't give you reasons so don't ask why

I read the story about a week ago
They found her on the beach that night
They thought the light had gone out of her eyes
and no-one thinks she'll ever be right
She was so full of her life
Happy with the people she knew
But then no-one can tell

Child come away
It's the girl with the deputy walking by
Child go and play
No I won't give you reasons so don't ask why

Guess all they found were some marks in the sand
A message saying 'She is mine'
Nobody touched her as she got in the car
Well nobody dares to anytime
She was so full of her life
The girl that everybody once knew
But now no-one can tell

Child come away
It's the girl with the deputy walking by
Child go and play
No I won't give you reasons so don't ask why

And when they read a story out to the judge
I heard they had to turn away
It's all over town

I saw her face in the back of a car
As they were speeding out of town
She's got a mark on the side of her face
that no-one's ever seen around
And what she is or what she's become
I guess the town will never know

Child come away
It's the girl with the deputy walking by
Child go and play
No I won't give you reasons so don't ask why

Cambodia

A mysterious open-ended story.

Well he was Thailand based
She was an airforce wife
He used to fly weekends
It was the easy life
But then it turned around
And he began to change
She didn't wonder then
She didn't think it strange
But then he got a call
He had to leave that night
He couldn't say too much
But it would be alright
He didn't need to pack
They'd meet the next night
He had a job to do
Flying to Cambodia

And as the nights passed by
She tried to trace the past
The way he used to look
The way he used to laugh
I guess she'll never know
What got inside his soul
She couldn't make it out
Just couldn't take it all
He had the saddest eyes
The girl had ever seen
He used to cry some nights
As though he lived a dream
Ans as she held him close
He used to search her face
As though she knew the truth
Lost inside Cambodia

But then a call came through
They said he'd soon be home
She had to pack a case
And they would make a rendez-vous
But now a year has passed
And not a single word
And all the love she knew
Has disappeared out in the haze
Cambodia - Don't cry now - No tears now

And now the years have passed
With not a single word
But there is only one thing left
I know for sure
She won't see his face again

View from a bridge

Could it be about a girl who throws herself off a bridge after witnessing her lover's infidelity or is my mind too crooked?

It was funny for me to learn that, when the song came out, 80s teens would sing along to "beer from the fridge / can't drink anymore" LOL

View from a bridge, can't take anymore
View from a bridge, can't take anymore
I guess it all began about a year ago
Like a cheap love magazine
You know the kind you read about
And have to laugh
At the pages in between
Now I can't believe that fool inside is me
'Cos I just can't face the world
I've grown to see
View from a bridge, can't take anymore
View from a bridge, can't take anymore
I saw you kissing her
I saw you making her
In the soft sheets in between
But when you turned around
I saw your eyes were fire
And you crashed out all my dreams
And like a fool I just stood there
And let it go
I should have fought right back
And let my feelings show
View from a bridge, can't take anymore
View from a bridge, can't take anymore
You sure as hell knew how
To make a fool out of me
Well you cut me down
For the things you want
And now it's killing me
I'll lay it on the line now
You're running out of time now
But then a voice said jump
And I just let go
And I'm floating out in space
But then I feel your arms
And I turn around
To a ghost without a face
And I just don't know
What's fact or fantasy
'Cos when I look below the bridge

So, what do you think these songs are about?

If you gave me a fresh carnation, I would only crush its tender petals ...

I was in my teens when I heard this song by the British band The Jam for the first time. It wasn't even the original, but Oasis' cover - which I find every bit as good as The Jam's, or at least very close.

I have always found this tune so haunting ever since, and I think it all boils down to the combination of opposites, for whenever there is a line exuding charm or tenderness - which would make us expect that beauty is about to come into sight-, there comes immediately another one to grind that beauty into pieces. I think everybody, at some point in their lives, has ever felt something similar.

The Jam

The Gallaghers

If you gave me a fresh carnation

I would only crush its tender petals
With me you'll have no escape
And at the same time there'll be nowhere to settle

I trample down all life in my wake
I eat it up and take the cake
I just avert my eyes to the pain
Of someone's loss helping my gain

If you gave me a dream for my pocket
You'd be plugging in the wrong socket
With me there's no room for the future
With me there's no room with a view at all

I am out of season all year 'round
Hear machinery roar to my empty sound
Touch my heart and feel winter
Hold my hand and be doomed forever

If you gave me a fresh carnation
I would only crush its tender petals
With me you'll have no escape
And at the same time there'll be nowhere to settle.

And if you're wondering by now who I am
Look no further than the mirror
Because I am the Greed and Fear
And every ounce of Hate in you.
